Glossop Vision addresses concerns of local traders

Improvement works schedule up-dated February 8 - details here

After the traders' meeting held on Tuesday, November 20, High Peak Borough Council in conjunction with Glossop Vision Board has instructed Morrison Highways Maintenance to revise their town centre programme to address the concerns of the meeting.

The Glossop Vision Board and the Council are aware of the problems caused by the works and sympathise fully with the frustrations of the traders. Because of this they are taking steps to respond quickly and positively to the concerns of local traders.

The Council has discussed the details with Morrison and they have confirmed the following actions:

  • No work will be undertaken on the south side of High Street West before Christmas. Work to this area will begin in January 2008 and will be approached in three distinct sections.
  • Substantive work on the north side of High Street West will be completed or made good by 30 November in accordance with the wishes of the traders, however small works such as grouting may be undertaken up to 7 December.
  • The area currently opened up at Norfolk Street (east side) will be completed by 7 December. No further works will be undertaken at Norfolk Street in December.
  •  Works to High Street East and Victoria Street will be undertaken in  January and February 2008.
  • Paving works to the station forecourt are ongoing and scheduled for completion on 14 December. The new staircase between Henry Street and the Co-op store are scheduled for opening in February 2008.
  • The programme will now be revised to take into account these issues and a schedule for works after the Christmas period will be issued shortly along with new comp

High Peak Borough Council have agreed to extend the two hours free parking provision into the new year until the town centre improvements are completed.

John Hart, Chair of Glossop Vision Board said:  “We appreciate that our local traders have experienced a difficult time during the regeneration work and we want to do everything in our power to try and reduce the disruption.

”We have been working closely with the contractor for this project in order to provide solutions to the immediate issues but also to ensure that the work is completed in a timely and effective way."

He went on to say:  “We would like to apologise to the businesses and local people that have been affected by these works and hope that our action plan meets with their approval.”
