Glossop Vision town centre improvements

In 2004 Glossop was selected as one of 27 pilots for the Government’s Liveability drive, which aims to make places, cleaner, greener and safer through improvements to the public realm.

The Glossop Vision Masterplan is a key component of the Glossop Vision Liveability programme. A masterplan is a strategic vision of how an area of a town can be enhanced and the Glossop plan provides a vision for the town to be implemented over a 15 year period identifying key areas of the town where improvements would make a real difference.

Public consultation was conducted to assess and prioritise the projects identified in the Masterplan using a number of criteria including public interest and desirability.

High levels of support were shown for projects relating to the High Street, the station forecourt and park areas and these areas were selected as the focus for investment using Liveability funding.

Architects and engineers are currently drawing up detailed designs for these sites. The scheme aims to deliver high quality improvements that boost investor confidence and make Glossop a vibrant and sustainable town centre.

The designs include new paving along the High Street, including Smithy Fold, work to improve pedestrian access along the station forecourt area and Henry Street and enhancement of the municipal building car park and market area.

The project focuses on sensitive and appropriate heritage led improvements. The materials used will reflect the traditional setting of Glossop, for example, the proposed improvements to the High Street will see stone paved footpaths and stone kerbs used.

Work is expected to begin on site in July 2007 and the improvements will delivered in a phased programme of work over a 24-week period to ensure a smooth implementation and minimise disruption. The outline plans can be viewed online at:

The Glossop Town Partnership was set up in June 2001. The purpose of the partnership was to start a town centre management initiative in Glossop taking into account and co-ordinating the needs of the town centre customers, employees, retailers, business interests, residents, freeholders, developers and local authorities.

The partnership completed a Countryside Agency health check, a process that identified key priorities for the town and its surrounding area. Many of the priorities identified on the health check are being addressed through the Glossop Vision Programme.

Membership of the Glossop Town Centre Partnership is open to any person, business or organisation that has a heart for Glossop and is willing to work with other partners to help achieve the vision and aims.
