The Healthcare Commission rated Tameside and Glossop Acute Services Trust (Tameside Hospital) as "good" in its annual health checks for 2005-6.

The hospital has applied for foundation status and it is about to spend £100 millions on new buildings.

David Heyes MP But David Heyes (left), the Labour MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, called for an independent inquiry into standards of care at the hospital which were criticised by coroner John Pollard.

He formed a Tameside Hospital Action Group for concerned families - email tamesidehospitalactiongroup@yahoo.co.uk.

In January 2007 the BBC reported that NHS North West had commissioned two independent experts to review the complaints.

Dame Pauline Fielding, honorary professor of nursing at the University of Central Lancashire, and Liz Craig, director of integrated governance at the North Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust, reported on 30 March 2007.

Tameside Hospital adjournment debate:  Hansard, 5 Dec 06

John Pollard Coroner John Pollard (right) identified 16 cases where complaints of neglect at Tameside General Hospital were made during inquests in 2006.

Ashton-under-Lyne Labour MP David Heyes compiled a dossier of more than 120 cases where families expressed concern about the way their loved ones were treated. Many expressed concern about nutrition, hygiene and infections on the geriatric wards.

Mr Heyes raised the case for an independent investigation into the standard of care at Tameside General Hospital in an adjournment debate in the House of Commons in December 2006.

Calling on Health Minister Ivan Lewis to act, Mr Heyes also set out the hospital's high death rate and poor record on superbug MRSA: "It seems that when things go wrong, the reaction is to look elsewhere to attribute blame - 'MRSA is not hospital-acquired, but home-acquired' and 'loss of public confidence in the hospital is the fault of the coroner'."

"What is more, the team set up by the hospital to look into issues arising from the coroner's comments is dominated by the very people who carried ultimate responsibility for the problems identified, meaning in effect they will be investigating themselves."

Mr Lewis said it would be "premature" to consider an independent inquiry and there was already evidence of improvements.

In January 2007 the BBC reported that NHS North West had commissioned two independent experts to review the complaints. Their report was published on 30 March 2007.

The hospital will be monitored by Tameside and Glossop Primary Care Trust and formally inspected by
NHS North West and the Healthcare Commission in six months and 12 months.
