Shop Smart, Shop Locally

Consumers in the Glossop area are being urged to "Shop Smart, Shop Local" (and let the syntax go hang) in a concerted campaign to persuade them to support the town's businesses, breathe new life into its economy - and do their bit to combat global warming.

High Peak Borough Council is extending the enterprising initiative to include Glossop in the social, economic and environmental benefits that shopping locally can bring, including creating and retaining jobs.

The council is keen to counter common misconceptions that shopping locally is more expensive or offers less choice, and to stress that it can be the most eco-friendly option, as well helping to keep communities vibrant and alive.

Following its initial introduction in the 'central' area of the borough - Chapel-en-le-Frith, Chinley, Hayfield, New Mills and Whaley Bridge - "Shop Smart, Shop Local" was launched in Glossop in 2007.

John Hart "Glossop still has an excellent range of small, many of them family-run, shops, but they need local people's support, if they are to continue to thrive in the future," said John Hart (right), chairman of the Glossop Vision board.

"Shop Smart, Shop Local aims to raise awareness of the need to back local businesses to preserve the unique character and economic viability of the town centre for generations to come.

"Many people mistakenly believe that shopping locally costs more - but if factors, such as travel, time and costs in transporting larger items home, are taken into account, the overall cost is often higher.

"And with warnings of global warming almost constantly in the headlines, it offers the ideal opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint.

"Local businesses often stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods and products, reduce the need for long car and bus journeys and are convenient for all - especially elderly, vulnerable, disabled and young people."

Other plus points include a more individual shopping experience, a more direct, responsive relationship with customers, high standards of customer care and service, generous support for local charities and community events, and help in maintaining private, voluntary and public sector services.

Mr Hart added: "In towns like Glossop, shops aren't just places to buy things, they encourage community spirit and a feeling of belonging, where residents meet to find out what"s new.

"So I hope as many people as possible will give their full backing to Shop Smart, Shop Local, by supporting our many and varied retail traders as much and as often as they can."

Shop Smart logo All businesses supporting Shop Smart, Shop Local will be asked to display a sticker bearing the campaign's distinctive green and black logo in their window.

Accompanying tool kits - brimming with marketing and promotional ideas and ways to encourage consumers to spend in local shops - are now available at reception areas in the Municipal Buildings, Glossop, or direct from Sarah Porru, market town project manager, on 0845 129 7777 extension 3523, or at glossopvision@highpeak.gov.uk.

Ten smart reasons to Shop Locally

Local shops:

    * Sell a wide range of products at affordable prices;
    * Can save both time and money, when you take other factors, such as travel and parking, into account;
    * Preserve communities where people can socialise and be part of the community, as well as spend;
    * Offer a distinctive shopping experience provided by independent, often innovative traders, who respond to customers' needs;
    * Save the environment by supporting locally-sourced goods and products, and reducing the need to travel;
    * Help to retain and create jobs;
    * Give generously to local charities, carnivals, schools and community events;
    * Are accessible to all - particularly elderly, vulnerable and young people, or those without transport;
    * Survive by reputation and repeat business, so offer high standards of service and customer care;
    * Help to preserve a range of private, voluntary and public sector services - such as dentists, hairdressers and veterinary centres.
