High Peak Borough Council are urging people to stay vigilant and check the identity of anyone claiming to work for the local authority.
The warning comes after a Buxton resident reported receiving a phone call from a man who said she was entitled to a tax refund and then asked her to reveal her bank details.
Advice has now been issued by Tim Norton an executive Councillor, who said “It’s unusual for the council to telephone someone without first sending written information. Nevertheless, anyone receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to represent the council should ask for the person’s name and job title. They should then ask the caller to ring back at a more convenient time before ending the call, and then check the caller’s credentials with the council.”
He also added that council workers always carry proof of identification and that homeowners should ask for this when council workers knock on their door.
