Buxton’s much loved Dome is celebrating its successful rejuvenation with the launch of www.atthedome.co.uk – a website every bit as fresh and welcoming as the building itself. Created by leading design agency FIG Creative, the new, easy-access portal is colourful and informative, giving a taste of the experience visitors to this fabulous building can expect.
Built in the late 18th Century, the Grade II* Listed Devonshire Dome has always moved with the times. Used originally to stable the Duke of Devonshire’s horses before becoming a hospital throughout wartime, a £20 million restoration completed in 2005 transformed it into its current incarnation – the Buxton Campus of the University of Derby.
It is now home to the University, Buxton College of Further Education, and a vibrant commercial enterprise of Spa, Hair and Beauty Salons, a Fine Dining Restaurant, Café, and Events At The Dome.
The Duke could barely have imagined the range of businesses now housed under the Dome’s majestic roof and neither, perhaps, could visitors to the Dome’s old website…
At The Dome’s Business Development Manager, Christine Sweetmore recalls: “We’d evolved so much our website was no longer doing justice to the diverse interests we represent. We needed to showcase the services we offer, generate traffic to the site and above all inspire people to find out more by coming to the Dome to see for themselves.”
The team had already worked with FIG Creative on a rebranding project for Buxton College and were confident they understood their requirements. Christine wasn’t disappointed: “The design is outstanding – much stronger than we’d imagined. It’s crisp, bright, friendly and informative and faithfully reflects what the Dome of today has to offer its visitors.”
Everything under one roof
So what exactly goes on under that iconic Domed roof…well, it’s one of the premier banqueting venues in Derbyshire with its hugely popular fine dining restaurant, an indulgent spa, health and beauty salons and a fashionable café.
The University and College’s hospitality and culinary arts, hair and beauty therapy and spa management students put their first class training into practise each day in these world class facilities. This emphasis on students’ experiential learning gives visitors the unique opportunity to experience the very latest in beauty treatments using Elemis products and sample the food of some of the country’s most promising young chefs at reasonable prices.
The Dome’s outstanding architecture, unique setting and considerable capacity mean its events business is blossoming too. From conferences and corporate events through to traditional weddings and civil ceremonies, it offers gravitas that few venues can compete with.
Buxton pushes for progress
The launch of the Dome’s new website is just part of a growing local desire to revitalise Buxton as was recently demonstrated by the Buxton Crescent project, which is expected to start this summer.
Martin Duncan, FIG Creative’s Business Development Director, works with SME businesses across the region. He has high hopes for both the Dome and Buxton: “The Dome represents a genuine local success story that combines education with business to provide a unique facility for the local community. This among other projects in Buxton can only add to its attraction. ”
