Mayfest presents: An Evening at the Cabaret Voltaire

A dramatic presentation of the events that took place in a seedy
night club in downtown Zurich.
In 1916, as a generation of young men were slaughtered on the battlefields of Europe, a motley group of poets, painters, revolutionaries and performers gathered together in a seedy night club in the red light district of Zurich to create  new order: one that might restore "the necessary balance between heaven and hell." In their attempt they created something completely new: a phenomenon they called Dada, which became one of the most influential of all art movements: inspiring the Surrealists, alternative cabaret, the Beats, Dylan, Monty Python and the  Punks! The Hacienda and the 'Madchester' scene and even perhaps the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 owe much to those extraordinary people who created something unique:

"...a force of nothingness in which all the higher questions are involved; a gladiator's gesture, a play with shabby leftovers, the death warrant of posturing morality and abundance."
