The idea is to celebrate the creativity, talents and skills of local people, particularly young people, through themes of local identity and renewal. The festival will include art, film, fire, folk, food, music, pageantry, painting, photography, poetry, sculpture, singing and story-telling.
And, of course, the burning of the Wicker
Man on the Beltane Bonfire. Put your bad memories in an envelope, stick it
in the Wicker Man and perhaps he'll take them away...
8.00 pm: Opening of Mayfest by Councillor Jacqui Wilkinson 8.30 pm: Inside the Wicker Man - an investigation of the 1973 movie 10.00 pm: Local election results
8.00 pm: An evening at the Cabaret Voltaire - see the show that started the Russian Revolution. An interactive event devised by Michael Howard, senior lecturer in the history of art at Manchester Metropolitan University £2 Surreal supper available 9.30 pm: The Mayfest Poets
11.00 am - 4.00 pm: Bank Holiday Café with wholesome home-made cakes and sandwiches 8.00 pm: LIVE! at the Labour Club with our own bitter-sweet singer-songwriter Eliza P
and the amazing Evad Snave, live flamenco T-V £5, concessions £3 Pie and pea supper available
8.00 pm: Baxter Investigates... Again! The 'world premiere' of a 90-minute locally-shot film from Johnny Cake Films, plus a spoof trailer, with popcorn and hotdogs available £2 From the people who brought you DIRTY HOWARD and 9.15 now comes the World Premiere of the feature length BAXTER INVESTIGATES… AGAIN!
12 noon: The Glossop Guizers' Ancient Pace Egg Play embarks on a 'world tour' of town centre pubs, starting from The Globe on High Street West at 12 noon. 12 noon: The Globe, High Street West5.00 pm: Summer pageant Join in the parade around the town centre with the Loathley Worm, the Green Man, Teaser, Fool, Hobby horse, Dragonwoman and kids in fancy dress 6.00 pm: Beltane barbecue and bonfire with burning of the Wicker Man (put your bad memories in an envelope and stick them in the Wicker Man), balloon sculpture, caricatures and face painting
8.00 pm: LIVE! at the Labour Club with Fayze2 - the extraordinarily talented young duo of Joe and James Fay from Hadfield £5, concessions £3 (including barbecue) All weekend - exhibition of paintings by Tracey Cupitt, Andrew Fruish, Helen Gerrard, Jean Hobson, Vaughan Parker and exhibition of work by pupils of Longdendale School Special guest beer for Mayfest: Beltane Bitter from Shaw's brewery, Denton Tickets and brochures available from the club, which is open Tuesday to Saturday, 8.00 - 11.00pm. |
