Glossop Mayfest

Glossop Mayfest group, which has run seasonal celebrations - including the burning of a Wicker Man - on the Mayday bank holiday weekend for the past couple of years, is planning to expand its activities in 2004.

Next year the festivities will extend throughout the month of May - from Mayday to the spring bank holiday at the end of the month - and will involve partnerships with other arts organisations in the town.

A meeting called by the Mayfest group at Glossop Labour Club on Monday (August 18) was attended by representatives of Glossop Art Society, Glossop Concert Society, Glossop Operatic and Dramatic Society, Glossop Jazz Festival, the Partington Players, Glossopdale Community College and Longdendale High School.

Other groups, including Glossop Arts and Leisure Association and The Lift Global Music Club, have also expressed an interest in a month-long arts festival which will hopefully attract visitors to the town. The Mayfest group is applying for funding to finance the increased activity.

Any other local arts groups which would like to become involved are invited to a planning meeting on Monday, November 19 at 7.30pm at Glossop Labour Club - or to contact Mayfest's secretary, Pat Irwin, on 01457 855071 or email pat@irwin32.freeserve.co.uk

Mayfest's next event will be a Hallowe'en ball and bonfire on Friday, October 31.
