This pilot - one of 27 in the country - forms part of the Government's Liveability drive to improve our towns and cities as places where people will choose to live. The pilots will see local councils working with the community to improve parks and open space, streets, public squares and a wide range of public space. The Glossop Vision programme will include a wide range of projects over the next three years focusing on town centre improvements, enhancement of the A57 corridor and investment in our parks. |
Glossop Vision This Liveability pilot programme has been
made possible due to a successful bid to operate one of 27 national
pilots as part of the Government's drive to improve towns and cities
as places where people choose to live. The programme sees the council working
with the local community to improve parks and open space, streets,
public squares and a wide range of public space. We have secured a
major grant
of £2.3m to help fund improvements. Good progress has been made in recent
months, including the development of the Glossop Vision Masterplan highlighting ideas for improvements
to areas such as the High Street, Market Place, Norfolk Square, Harehills
and Manor Parks. The first draft of the masterplan is available
to download here. The Liveability Fund project proposals
are here. |
Glossop Town Partnership
Workshops and a drop-in event for the local community were held
in October 2004 and enabled local residents to comment on which design
features they liked and disliked, with a view to influencing how proposals
might be developed further and what would be local priorities.Of the initial draft proposals those relating to the High Street and core area caught the imagination of most people. The station forecourt and links to Norfolk Square were seen as a high priority along with proposals for the High Street and stone flagging of pavements and planting of trees. Proposals for Manor Park, Harehills and Glossop Brook were also well received. The mill developments were identified as having the greatest impact on the town. The Vision Board will now consider a revised Masterplan taking on board public comment and consider priority projects that will take place in 2005. |
| Tidy Glossop Projects As part of the pilot we will be adopting new litter enforcement, trade waste and dog-fouling policies and will introduce fixed-penalty fines.
Residents in Glossop are being encouraged to report problems
through a new environmental reporting line linked to a 24-hour call
service on 0845 129 48 68.Additional activities include Civic Pride awards, school education programmes and urban ranger volunteers. Local businesses will be encouraged to sign up to a Tidy Business Standard Award Scheme. Advice and support will be given to local businesses on waste management and on how to achieve one of the award categories. Specific work with food outlets will be carried out to meet standards in a voluntary code of practice to minimise waste and litter. Neighbourhood Environmental Action Teams |
