Lift Festival THE LIFT GLOBAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
15 - 17 July 2005

The Lift is now eight years old and is one of the longest surviving world music clubs in the UK. Its success is down to the tireless energy of its entirely voluntary organising committee, whose passion for music of all genres always ensures an eclectic programme featuring top quality national and international performers.

The Lift’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and widening participation to all groups from the community has won support from High Peak Borough Council, the Glossop Town Partnership, Derbyshire County Council, The Paul Graney Memorial Folk Trust and the Arts Council of England.

The programme this year is more diverse than ever and special thanks are due to the Arts Council for enabling this to happen.

An exciting development this year has been securing funding for the benefit of all the arts groups in Glossopdale for a uniquely designed outdoor stage and light system which will further promote Glossop as an exciting tourist destination. It may not be ready for this year’s festival, but look out for future events! Many thanks are due to Glossop Town Partnership and Glossop Vision who are funding this initiative.
  • There will also be free events in pubs and around town over the weekend - keep your eyes peeled for more information.
Have a wonderful weekend and please check out our fortnightly gigs on our website and in the local press.

Rob Riley: Imagine the odd pearl of wisdom floating in a bucket of sick filth, served on very thin ice and you begin to get the picture.

Silky: Liverpudlian-in-exile Silky has performed all over the UK and Ireland, including the 2000 Glastonbury Festival. Upsettingly funny and biting, he is also the evil mastermind behind the Kill for a Seat Comedy clubs across the UK.

Desmond Decker and the Aces

Desmond Dekker Born in Kingston Jamaica in 1943, Desmond Dekker was a close friend of Bob Marley – they even worked together as trainee welders. Dekker’s breakthrough came in 1967 with 007 (Shanty Town) on Chris Blackwell’s Island label, but it was Israelites that came to define him. It became Britain’s first reggae chart topper in March 1969 and seems to have had a permanent place in the nation’s musical consciousness ever since. Now a sprightly 62 year old, he has just released a 59 track anthology, You Can Get it if You Really Want It, on Trojan Records.
