£1.3m lottery boost to help regenerate Glossop

The future of Glossop’s proud heritage was secured today (November 6) with a pledge of £1.3m from the
Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help regenerate the town and preserve its unique industrial character. An additional £25,000 in development funding has been awarded to complete the planning process.

Part of a wider £2.6m scheme administered by High Peak Borough Council and pending the success of a second application with more detailed plans, the HLF money will fund conservation works in the town centre, especially the repair and re-use of the town's historic mill buildings, and the reinstatement of original 1800s architectural features to the Victorian Market Hall and High Street shop fronts.

The pledge has been made through the fund's Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), which supports social and economic regeneration in communities by funding the repair and conservation of historic urban buildings.

The restoration and enhancement of this rich heritage through the THI will encourage social enterprise, provide much needed small business accommodation, attract shoppers, investment and new jobs.

Alongside the anticipated provision of 15,000 square metres of historic floorspace and 682 square metres of space for business, the town environment will be improved with government funded public realm works to link the riverside corridor.

Sheila Stone, HLF Regional Manager for the East Midlands said: "This is fantastic news for Glossop; preserving the historic heart of the town will ensure that its strong industrial heritage continues to play an important role in the future.

"Creating new uses for these much loved buildings will support the rejuvenation of Glossop and is a great example of how Heritage can have a positive impact on people's lives in the modern day."

Alan Wells, Executive Member for Regeneration from High Peak Borough Council added: "Bringing new life to these buildings as they are restored will be a real boost for Glossop and will support its future growth, providing opportunities for the community and making it an attractive location for visitors.

"We are delighted that HLF is supporting this important project, bringing a total investment of £3.5m into Glossop over the last 12 months. We look forward to working with them as we develop our plans and complete the grant application process."

From our great museums and historic buildings to local parks and beauty spots or recording and celebrating traditions, customs and history, HLF grants open up our nation’s heritage for everyone to enjoy.

In the 10th birthday year of the National Lottery we have supported more than 15,000 projects, allocating over £3 billion across the UK. For more detailed information on events and activities taking place to celebrate the 10th birthday, please visit www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk

THI provides grants of between £250,000 and £2 million to help local partnerships regenerate historic areas of their towns and cities through financial support for repair and other work to a number of historic properties. The programme, which aims to support around 20 schemes each year, is designed to tackle problems in areas of particular social and economic need throughout the United Kingdom.
