High Peak borough council's bid for 'Liveability' funding

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott announced on Monday, February 2, 2004 that Glossop was one of three areas in the East Midlands to share £8.8 millions of government funding.

High Peak's successful bid for government 'Liveability' funding will mean:

  • major improvements to Manor & Philip Howard Parks - to include refurbished playgrounds, upgraded paths to ensure access for all and comprehensive signage linked to town centre;
  • Municipal car park and market place - the market place and car park will be made more accessible to people with mobility problems and the outdoor market will be enhanced; and
  • Howard Town & Wren Nest Mills - to ensure that these significant mill complexes contribute positively to the public realm, through the provision of safe and accessible public space.
There will also be an Urban Ranger Team, to be created using staff from Intermediate Labour Market/New Deal schemes and community volunteers. Rangers would get involved in things like provision of information, helping to maintain parks and supporting Neighbour Environmental Action Teams in areas such as litter, graffiti and dog fouling.

High Peak Borough Council Secures Grant for Glossop!

High Peak Borough Council today expressed its delight at its successful bid for funding from the Government’s Liveability Scheme.

"This is wonderful news," said Councillor Alan Wells, High Peak Borough Council’s Executive member for regeneration. "This will be a real shot in the arm for Glossop.  We will now be able to create the regeneration corridor along Glossop Brook and deal with the damage caused by the flash flood in August 2002. This reflects the awareness and opportunism of the new Coalition. Our thanks must go to all those involved in the submission for all their hard work in producing a successful bid."

The successful bid results from working with the Glossop Town Partnership. The grant will help to fund a 'regeneration corridor' along Glossop Brook, taking in the town centre, the two mills and Manor and Philip Howard Parks. The partnership has worked with a number of key partners to draw up the scheme and will now embark on a major public consultation exercise so everyone can have their say on what they want to see.

"We are looking forward to getting as many views as possible on the exact projects to include in the scheme." said John Hart, chair of the Glossop Town Partnership.  "With the Glossop Vision in place to give us the starting point, we now have the funding to make Glossop a place for local residents and businesses to be proud of."

In August last year the council put in a bid for funding from the Government's new 'Liveability' grant scheme of £89m, which is aimed at supporting local authority projects to improve parks and public spaces.  Each of the nine regional areas in the country has three pilot projects and the Minister announced the final list on Monday 2 February.

The Mersey Basin Campaign has been very active in helping to put the bid together.  Development Manager, Iain Taylor, said: "Residents, businesses and visitors will all benefit from a revitalised Glossop Brook.  Waterside regeneration has been highly successful all over the country.  This is a fantastic opportunity to bring a new lease of life to Glossop Brook and at the same time reconnect it to the town's other assets."

The borough council and the partnership are grateful for the involvement and commitment of Derbyshire County Council in developing the bid and for implementing the service improvements planned.
