Glossop Environmental Group Trust

Sponsor a flagstone for Henry Street

No more patched tarmac!
Yes to sustainable flagstones!

Henry Street, on the north side of Norfolk Square, Glossop, is being improved under a Heritage Environment Regeneration Scheme. But the budget only allows for the pavements to be surfaced with tarmac instead of the York stone paving slabs which would be much more appropriate to the character of the square.

Glossop Environmental Group Trust is trying to raise the money to re-pave the pavements in Henry Street with York stone.

Can you sponsor a flagstone for £50?

Please call the Glossop Chronicle on 01457 865474
to pledge your donation.

We have received a boost to our campaign to restore the flagstones on Henry Street from Glossop Town Partnership.

At the meeting on Monday, March 29 we asked if £8,000 of the unspent budget could be given towards the cost of buying and laying the flagstones. Together with the £3,350 which has been pledged by businesses and the public, a total of £11,350 will have been raised. This is sufficient to pave the area at the top of Norfolk Square.

This also means that we now have the minimum amount needed and we can now ask for donations of any size from the general public. We have put collection boxes in The Curly Cornet, Taylor and Wood, Partington Theatre, all on Henry Street, also in the Rainbow Bistro and the Glossop Chronicle office. We thank them all for their continuing support.

We are busy collecting our pledges and welcome more. Our aim is still to try to raise funds to pave the entire street.

As a group we have asked for permission from the Co-op to clear the litter from their grassed area at the back of the Heritage Centre garden. We will be meeting at 9.00am on Sunday April 25 at the said area. Anyone wishing to help is very welcome. There are brambles so please come prepared. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Glossop Environmental Group Trust is a voluntary group of three who pick up litter in Glossop every day.

We are working voluntarily to improve our town. This is our first major project involving fund-raising.

To enhance Henry Street and restore its original character we are trying to raise £62,775.

The existing budget for restoring Henry Street will only allow for tarmac as the surface for the pavements.

Estimates said that £100,000 would be needed to supply and lay 675 square metres of thick York stone flags - 2,000 flags at £50 each. But, thanks to Sam Eastwood finding a cheaper source, they could be acquired for £62,775.

In August 2002 we ran a petition in response to Derbyshire County Council's consultation exercise for their Forward Planning Transport policy. The petition, which was run by seven businesses on Henry Street and the Partington Theatre, asked for Henry Street to be redesigned surfaced in the style of a Home Zone. It was signed by the residents of Glossop and ran for three months.

Derbyshire County Council asked for a report to be made to committee and set about designing plans. The Conservation Department of High Peak Borough Council were already involved in ideas for Henry Street.

Derbyshire County Council are to spend £75,000 on the project. The Single Regeneration Budget will provide £30,000. English Heritage Regeneration Scheme will provide £10,000.

The total of £115,000 will only provide tarmac as the surface for the pavements.

We as an environmental group feel that flagstones will restore this main  street in the central conservation area of Glossop to its original character. The original flagstones are still there in places, surrounded by patched tarmac. The flagstones will be there for centuries, with low maintenance. All the buildings on both sides of the street are listed. One building is Glossop Heritage Centre.

So, we need sponsors.

A major sponsor would be rewarded with a commemorative flagstone on Henry Street.

All sponsors will be acknowledged in the Glossop Chronicle and the Heritage Centre window and recorded on the Success Chart. A commemorative book will be made of all sponsors and given to the Heritage Centre to be kept as a legacy to Glossop.
