The bursaries of between £150 and £400 were awarded by the Podium sports partnership to help the rising stars meet training and competition costs.

What is more, all the recipients have been given free access to swimming pools and fitness gyms run by DC Leisure for the Borough Council, which is a Podium partner.

Grant-aided athletes include 18-year-old Glossop pole vaulter Katie Byres, who is waiting to hear if she has made the Great Britain athletics squad for the London 2012 Olympics.

Katie jumped 4m 36 in the French Elite Pole Vault Tour in January, breaking the national junior record and putting her fourth on the UK all-time women’s list.

Other recipients include 20-year-old swimmer Russell Smith, from New Mills, who won a silver medal at the British Championships in the 50m breaststroke, and competed in the Olympic trials last month.

Bamford-based skiing brothers James and Robert Machon, aged 21 and 19 respectively, are both aiming for the 2014 Winter Olympics. James hopes to win the British Championships for a fourth year running in 2012 while Robert recently triumphed in the University Slopestyle title at the Castleford Snow Zone.

Bursaries were also awarded to Stephen Brunt (archery), from Buxton; Marsie Henderson-Hirst (archery), from Buxton; Jack Massey (boxing), from Chapel-en-le-Frith; George Bloor (golf), from Chapel-en-le-Frith; Ben Higgins (golf), from Buxton; Judith Browne (ice hockey), from Glossop; Abigail Walker (judo), from Glossop; Eric Ham (judo), from Hadfield; and Rhiannon Baldwin (judo), from Glossop.

The other recipients were Holly Rogers (kickboxing), from Buxton; Jake Hutchinson (lacrosse), from Birch Vale; Dominic O’Connor (rugby union), from Glossop; Danielle Blinco (shooting), from Buxton; Hannah Davies (shooting), from New Mills; David Voorheis (shooting), from Buxton; Abbie Wood (swimming), from Buxton; and Joel Leighton (water polo), from Hope Valley.

A civic reception was thrown for the athletes in Buxton Swimming and Fitness Centre on Tuesday (May 1) when borough council leader Caitlin Bisknell joined forces with Anthony McKeown, executive councillor for community services; Mark Warburton, DC Leisure contract manager; Cllr George Wharmby, chairman of Derbyshire County Council; his consort, Cllr Jean Wharmby; and Cllr Carol Hart, chair of Derbyshire Sport; to congratulate the guests of honour on their achievements.

Cllr McKeown said: “While the next few weeks will be all about our current athletes as they take part in the Olympics, without a focus on the next generation, that enthusiasm and legacy from the Olympics will be lost, which is why the Podium funding and support to the next generation is so important.

“Within the High Peak, there is a breadth and depth of sporting talent which, with our support through schemes such as this, can go on to achieve great things on the national and international stage whilst their dedication to their chosen sport makes them marvellous role models for young people in our communities”.

Managed by Derbyshire Sport, Podium is backed by the county’s sport and business scheme ICON, with money raised from the scheme used to support local athletes through Podium. The borough council is one of more than 40 Podium members.

The force is one of the first in the country to begin recruiting new police officers and is planning to take on 60 people to start training during 2013.

The last campaign generated a lot of interest from people in the Derby and Nottingham areas. This time the force is particularly keen to encourage applicants who would be willing to work in the Buxton or Glossop areas.

Chief Constable Mick Creedon said: “We also want to hear from women, young people, and people who are lesbian or gay or from an ethnic minority, all of whom are under-represented in our workforce at the moment.”

The recruitment department has 750 application packs and is asking people to telephone the team to request a pack.

The phone lines will be open on Wednesday 9, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 May, between 4pm and 8pm only. The lines will close as soon as all 750 packs have been issued.

John Fellowes Head of Fundraising said “We’ve moved the “Wander” back to a Friday, following last year’s Saturday trial, as we were told in no uncertain terms that Friday night is the traditional girl’s night out and who am I to argue with the girls! Another change for 2012 is we have listened to our “wanderers” and we will be going back to the “old” route”.

This annual Ladies only event, will start at midnight on Friday 13th July and will take in parts of Stalybridge, Ashton, Dukinfield and Hyde before returning to the start and finish point in Cheethams Park Stalybridge.

John continued by saying “and I would ask that any lady who may be superstitious not to worry and to be put off by the Friday 13th date – ladies will actually be walking on Saturday 14th
Hospice Matron, Karen Vallantine, who is hoping to do the Wander again this year, said “Last year, nearly 900 women took part raising over £70k to help us provide our specialist care to the people of Tameside and Glossop. This was a tremendous boost to our financial needs and I, and my nurses, are extremely grateful to everyone for their support.

Karen continued “The Midnight Wander is such a fun way of supporting the hospice and it would be wonderful if we could beat last year’s total but we can only do that if ladies sign up and walk with us on the night.”

The new bin will be used for:

Cardboard packaging and boxes.

The expanded service, operated by contractors Veolia Environmental Services, will mean that around half of all households will see a change to the day or week during which their bins are emptied. But a leaflet spelling out the changes will be delivered to all properties alongside the new bin.

“The new, improved service is great news for keen recyclers who will no longer have to put up with the inconvenience and fuel costs of taking plastics to the neighbourhood recycling centres. The change will also see the end of the blue bags, with just the red bag for clothing being retained as part of the new service.

The new brown bin will work alongside the green-lidded bin for garden waste and food scraps, the black bin for residual rubbish, and the green kerbside box – which will be used for glass only from Monday, July 2.

The attack happenned in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the attack.They are all from Glossop and aged 23, 25 and 29 years.

Police are appealing for two witnesses who helped them following the assault at 4.15am on Saturday. Anyone with information is asked to contact DS Woodward at Glossop CID using the non-emergency number 101.

The task this week was to invent a condiment, something people would enjoy with their food and they had to sell it to trade and the public.. Team Sterling decided to make a chutney and Mr Corbally and co agreed on an Italian ketchup called “Belisimo” rather than “Bellisimo” which is how it was meant to be spelt.

Team Sterling actually did very well and sold twice the amount the team Phoenix did consequently Michael, Ricky and Katie were left in the boardroom with Michael receiving the finger from Lord Sugar.

Adam managed to get on the wrong side of Lord Sugar after boasting that he had a ‘major role in the operation as per usual’, to which Lord Sugar retorted, ‘What was that, modesty manager?’

He also came in for a fair bit of criticism from the judges on the follow up programme on BBC2 with Levi Roots saying “he couldn’t see what Adam had contributed” and comedienne Jenny Éclair claiming to be offended by his patronising manner.
