Your views wanted for the Big Drink Debate A new organisation from NHS North West
has launched a major new initiative and debate around the subject of
alcohol, and they want as many people in the region to join in as
possible. Working with Tameside and Glossop PCT, Our Life is dedicated to giving North West residents a voice in creating a healthier environment for themselves, and the Big Drink Debate is their first major consultation. The NW Big Drink Debate was launched on Monday, May 12
and is to be the largest regional survey of its kind. It will be the
first step in a regional-level effort to find effective ways of
promoting safer and more social drinking in the region, which currently
rates the worst out of the nine English regions for harmful and
hazardous drinking. The percentage of adults consuming hazardous and harmful levels of alcohol in the North West is cited at 35.5%, higher than all other regions. A Tameside and Glossop PCT survey in 2005 found that 82% of those residents surveyed drank alcohol, of which 41% drank more than the recommended daily guideline amount during the seven days prior to the survey. Our Life has partnered with local PCTs and the Government Office NW to create this debate around the use of alcohol and its impacts on us as individuals, communities and society. The debate will last for three months and will finish on Sunday, August 17. It will revolve around a self-selecting questionnaire which will be available both on-line and in hard copy. The aim of the questionnaire is to uncover drinking consumption levels and attitudes, understand what awareness the public currently have of alcohol issues, better understand behaviours in relation to when and where people buy and drink alcohol, and what the current appetite is for reducing alcohol consumption. Alison Giles, Director of the Our Life programme, said "This is an exciting opportunity for everybody in the North West to join in the debate about how we could change our behaviour. We want as many people as possible to fill in the questionnaire and give their views." Melanie Sirotkin, Director of Public Health at Tameside and Glossop PCT said "We are happy to support Our Life with this initiative. Alcohol has a major impact on the health of people in Tameside and Glossop, so it's hugely important for people to make their voices heard on this subject." The information gathered during the debate will inform the next steps that Our Life takes in partnership with stakeholders to plan campaigning and advocacy work around alcohol. Our Life would like to see as many people as possible taking part in the survey and debate. To take part, simply log on to www.bigdrinkdebate.com. |
