Written by Dr John Smith with the help of a team of researchers, The WEA in Glossop - a branch history tells the story of  the Workers' Educational Association in Glossop from its beginnings in 1907 to the present day.

At the start of the last century ordinary working men and women only had access to elementary education. The WEA, drawing on lecturers from university extra-mural departments, gave these working people a chance to  experience the best academic education without being patronised or talked down to.

The Glossop branch carried on with some ups and downs and for a long time after World War II was very active and was largely responsible for the Adult Education Centre being set up in the old grammar school. A number of men and women went on from WEA classes to full time university courses.

More recently, under the control of the Learning and Skills Council the WEA has suffered from a funding shortage and has had to endure levels of bureaucracy which have led to the closure of some branches. Despite this the Glossop branch continues to provide high quality adult classes.
The book is available from Glossop Heritage Centre in Henry Street, price £7.50.
