An organisation for retired people (3rd agers), with leisure time available to meet like-minded members, to expand their knowledge, share interests or acquire new skills, and make new friends. Each U3A is essentially a co-operative of men and women who meet to share common interests and a desire to learn for its own sake, with membership open to all over-50s no longer in full-time employment. Although called a university, no educational qualifications are required. The ethos of the U3A is to share our knowledge and experiences, and develop our own individual capabilities by learning from other members. Launched in France in 1972, the movement has now spread worldwide. In the UK, all local U3As are autonomous. This is our strength, in that we decide what we would like to do and then we arrange it.
Membership is available to people living in the Glossop area. There are two forms of membership – Full members and Group members. All activities are open to Full members. Group members (who pay a reduced subscription) are entitled to attend any group activities and any trips or outings. All members are expected to join at least one interest group. Interest groups meet periodically (see separate list of Groups). Groups are self-financed. Visits are arranged to concerts, theatres and places of interest. Travel is usually by train, coach or car share. Please see our deposits and cancellations policy. For membership enquiries please contact Mary Muir, membership secretary, on 01457 866130 or email dmmglossop@aol.com. |
