NW U3A NEWS Issue no 2 August 2009 Diary of Events The Jodrell event is
proving very popular and it will also be run on a second date, the 2nd
Oct. The format will be exactly the same as the event on 25th Sept.
In view of the limited number of U3A's who have filled the 25th
September day, it appears possible that
we may even have to try to arrange a third Jodrell event. The 25th
September date is now completely FULL. An application form for the second event
is attached as Appendix 1. If you are interested but cannot make
this date please let me know. We have not yet
had much response to the Lancashire Sinfonietta event organised by Lancs
Link. The Sinfonietta are giving public concerts in Lancaster on 24th
Oct and Preston on 25th October at 19.30. In association with this, U3A
Lancashire Link have organised a session by the
Sinfonietta's Principal Oboe Rachael Clegg, who will give a Recital and Talk
related to the concert on Wednesday
21st Oct at St Cuthbert's
Church Centre, Lytham Road, Fulwood, Preston at 14.00. Please
advertise this in your U3A if you are not too far from Preston. The concert has
a top class set of soloists and the talk/recital promises to be very good also.
Please let John Ellison know asap (01524 733 400 or email) as present numbers
are not enough to make the Wed 21st event viable. NWREC has decided on major
changes to the Residential School. This is now fixed as 7th to 10th
April 2010 at Myerscough College, Bilsborrow just off the A6 between
Preston and Garstang instead of the date in July at Newton Rigg,
Penrith. The reason for this change is partly the difficulty in
arranging a deposit for a school so far in the future as the previous July
date, partly finding an alternative and very attractive venue with first rate
facilities on a big rural campus with extensive gardens of high quality at a
very good price, and partly being able to return to our original idea of having
it in the spring well away from the National Summer Schools. The School will
start late morning on Wed 7th April, and run till after lunch
on Saturday 10th April and this full 3 day school will cost no more
than the previously envisaged 2 day one. In order for us to complete the
planning will you please return the form in Appendix 2 asap in order to book a
provisional place and make a preliminary selection of study courses. We
have now got a substantial fraction of Tutors fixed and we need to know about
interests for some others. Accommodation will be in modern en-suite single
rooms very close to a lecture theatre and a suite of study rooms which are very
flexible and are fully equipped with facilities for presentations (e.g. power
point type). We are not requesting any
money at this stage but we estimate the basic cost for full board (including
lunch on both Wed and Sat), morning and afternoon refreshments, the study
courses and some evening special talks will be in the region of £180/£200 which is excellent value. A few specific courses
(particularly those involving trips) are expected to require a supplement. Day
delegates can be accommodated with full board at a significantly lower price. The planning of the Study
Day at Lancaster on 4th November for actual and
potential group leaders/coordinators from U3A's is now more advanced and
you need to apply now. This will follow the general format of the ones held in
07 at Alston Hall, and 08 at Bolton. The idea is to have sessions on different
topics in small groups in different rooms in parallel for much of the time and
have one or two short talks of general interest (probably use of laptops with
digital projectors and hints on how to keep groups fresh). Refreshments
(morning and afternoon) and lunch will be included and the study day will run
from 10.15 till 16.15 at a cost of £12. An application form is attached as appendix
3. This should be returned asap and by 5th October if at all
possible. If it is over booked acceptance will be on a first come first served
basis. What

the latest information. 1) The Edinburgh
conference has got a satisfactory number of bookings (after a very slow start). 2) The trust is
finding it difficult adapting to the rapid increase in the size of the
organisation. 3) Submissions and
bids under the government white Paper are progressing. 4) More efforts
are being made to enhance the public profile of the movement. Events in the
NW Major changes
and developments were discussed. These are reflected in the Diary of Events
above. Communications In view of important
developments it was agreed that a second Newsletter should be produced
immediately. We would be
very glad if a copy of each of our Newsletters could be posted on each NW U3As
website. We have not yet got a
person to start up our NW U3A website. The idea is to have someone set it up
and then for a NWREC member to maintain it. WE URGENTLY NEED A VOLUNTEER TO
SET IT UP FOR US. John Ellison 23.08.2009 APPENDIX 1 NW REGION U3A VISIT TO JODRELL BANK OBSERVATORY SECOND
